BossHoles want to get rid of everyone who fails. They go around threatening employees with termination for every transgression real and imagined. They create a stressful, miserable, and destructive fixed-mindset environment.
Great Bosses nurture the environment to bring out the best in their people. They create safe, enjoyable and growth mindset environments by building patterns of success through praising good work and offering constructive feedback on how to improve when failure or setbacks happen.
Bringing the Best Out of People
If a teammate is practicing a skill, and learns to build on that skill, and gets a little better each time she tries it, her technique is improving. She will be more likely to see that success manifest in performance. A Great Boss builds good habits in people and teaches them the techniques they need at the level needed to succeed.
The team will be much more likely to succeed when the skill levels of the team are constantly improving. There are plenty of people with physical talent who lack the mental skills or the integrity or the character to do the job, and so once again, it’s your responsibility to bring the best out of people.
WARNING BOSSHOLE ALERT!
BossHoles will always try to steal other team’s top talent. They are so bad at developing skills in their own organization that they can only compete by finding talent that already knows what to do.
The only way to prevent BossHoles from stealing your best talent is to create a work environment that no one wants to leave. Great Bosses discover what people do well and put them in the position to succeed. BossHoles do just the opposite.
They put people in the wrong place. They try to have them succeed at skills that they are not actually good at, and they destroy the morale and the quality of play.
